The Push Braces Ortho Thumb Brace CMC is a thumb brace used for osteoarthritis in the thumb’s meta-carpal joint (CMC).
The Push Ortho Thumb Brace CMC is recognised as the best thumb brace on the market for treatment of CMC joint injuries. The CMC brace stabilises the joint at the base of the thumb and positions the thumb metacarpal correctly which creates anarch. This ensures proper hand grip. It provides pain relief when experiencing thumb stress whilst allowing freedom in other joints of the thumb and wrist and assists in helping create an optimal functioning hand.
The CMC brace removes the need for custom made orthotics to stabilise the CMC-1 thumb joint by its pre-formed flexible plastic enclosure. The enclosure envelopes the base of the thumb and the bracing effect is created with an arc of aluminium following the contours of the lower aspect of the thumb embedded in the plastic. The aluminium splint can be manipulated for individual thumb contours and optimal stabilisation of the joint.
The brace is completed by fastening the two Velcro straps around the back of the hand which allows the brace to be easily fitted by the individual. The material and rounded edges allows for maximum comfort and is antimicrobial, can be used in water and can be dried easily.

Symptoms include:

I purchased the brace as a last resort prior to having to return to my GP for a steroid injection to calm my thumb joint pain due to osteoarthritis. I had stopped being able to play the guitar and was having to cycle less due to the joint pain. I initially purchased the incorrect size. I hadn’t thought to speak to the Vivomed advisers which you are encouraged to do. Following my mistake I spoke to them and they were very helpful with returning the brace for the correct size. I have now used the brace when cycling 8 miles and have played the guitar again. So far so good. Hopefully with use of the brace and daily thumb & hand strengthening exercises I will be able to avoid any further medical intervention for a while.

I have a left and a right hand version. They fit ok (not great, but ok) and have definitely lowered my pain levels but there’s a bit of pinching in the web of my thumb on both hands. It’s perfect if I wear a plaster under that part but then you end up going through a lot of plasters because of hand washing. I’ve also tried the Mueller under wrap but not quite perfected how to wrap yet – if you go around the whole hand it can make the brace slide up slightly but wrap too much around just the thumb/web part it can ruin the fit.
Sometimes they feel a bit awkward to wear – I’d say restrictive, but I know that’s kinda the point! Maybe it just takes a bit of getting used to, plus I am hypermobile so I would imagine they are only restricting my movement to a “normal” level when I’m used to having extra range of motion compared to other people.

I bought this having had pain in the CMC joint in my left thumb due to osteoarthritis. Having tried multiple other splints as recommended by my GP, I finally found this one. It was more expensive than the others I had purchased, but I guess you get what you pay for. In this case, it has been excellent, and supports my thumb extremely well, lessening the pain and preventing me from having to have cortisone into the joint, which was the next step. Having had multiple cortisone injections into my lower back for osteoarthritis, I was reluctant to start that process over again…..!!! Highly recommended. Give it a few weeks, but all I can say is I have 85% -90% fewer painful events and can use it much better than before.
