What are fixation tapes?
What are fixation tapes?
As in the story of Elastoplast, Smith and Nephew, then later BSN became the market leaders in fixation tape.
Created for the woundcare market, these tapes are designed as retention dressings, and used in the hospital and medical setting to cover a dressing and keep it firmly in place.
However in 1986 Australian physiotherapist Jenny McConnell initiated a treatment for Patello-femoral pain which involved the use of the rigid sports tape Leukotape P to reposition the patella, and in so doing reduce the pain resulting from soft tissue by offloading the pressure on the tissue.
To protect the skin in this technique McConnell used the hypoallergenic Hypafix under the zinc oxide tape.
Thus was born the concept of McConnell taping for Patello- Femoral pain, and the consequent worldwide use of Hypafix as an underwrap
How to choose  a fixation tape?
As with Elastoplast becoming re-branded as Tensoplast, Hypafix became Fixomull Stretch and is now universally used in every physiotherapy practice to protect the skin for various taping techniques.
Fixomull stretch fixation bandage is a white, non woven, soft polyester tape with a hypoallergenic medical grade polyacrylate adhesive. Fixation tapes tend to be both air and moisture permeable and conform well to body contours. Vivofix is a top quality alternative from the excellent range of sports tapes from Vivomed.
The McConnell taping technique is now so popular a Leukotape P combi pack of 1 roll of Fixomull and 1 roll of Leukotape P is now one of the best selling Physio products.
Ironically, this style of hypoallergenic adhesive was the per-cursor of the Kinesio Tape revolution, where fascia repositioning may run side by side with the stronger taping techniques of Leukotape P zinc oxide tape.
How to use Fixomull?
This style of tape is attached to a backing paper, so the tape must be measured and cut to the appropriate length before gently peeling and applying it to the area of the skin to be protected.
